The compatibility gotcha we see regularly: homeowners buy ComfortTherm at the big-box store for their open attic because it’s what’s on the shelf, not realizing the kraft facing can trap moisture against the drywall in a Huntington Beach coastal climate. • Upstairs rooms that won’t hold temperature. If your upstairs is 80 degrees at midnight in August while the downstairs is cool, your attic insulation isn’t doing its job. JM fiberglass loses effectiveness when it’s been walked on, compressed, or blown around by soffit vents.
• Your AC bill climbed with no change in usage. In Huntington Beach, most homes run AC from July through October. If your SCE bill is up 25% or more from last summer with the same thermostat setting, heat is getting into the attic and pushing down through your ceiling.
• You can see the ceiling joists. If your blown-in JM insulation is level with or below the top of your 2×6 or 2×8 ceiling joists, you’re under-insulated. Where DIY goes wrong: blown-in fiberglass requires a calibrated machine if you want consistent coverage and the rated R-value. Batt installation looks simple until you’re cutting around can lights, plumbing vents, and truss chords in a 130-degree attic in August. And fiberglass dust in your lungs or embedded in your forearms is miserable.
